Upcoming forum upgrade to phpBB 3.0

Postby dionoea » 27 May 2007 21:05

We'll be upgrading the forums to phpBB 3.0 (we're currently running phpBB 2.0) in a few days / weeks. To make sure that everything works as expected, I ran a dummy conversion of the forums. Parts of the conversion went wrong (some user accounts and forum topics/posts didn't make it) but it should pretty much be ok. The test forum is located at http://new-forum.videolan.org . We will be testing some of the new phpBB 3.0 features there (AFAIK jb and I will have admin rights during the test phase). We'd appreciate if you could login there and comment (especially if you notice stuff that didn't convert correctly from this forum).

Btw: Please post comments about the test forum as a reply to this topic, and not in the new forum.

I know it's still under development but you said to report here.
  • Not all replies to threads were converted correctly, some of them are far less then what's in this current forum.
  • Avatars are smaller? Oh well. 8)

  • Polls look a little strange, I guess.
  • Some things were linked correctly while other display url. Example
  • I guess the Cone will come in later. :P
So far I like the overall look and hope that more are to come. I also really like the box for posting replies since it's much bigger now and you're not forced to scroll left and right to view the entire post. :D

I'll test some more out later and post back.

Is there any special reason usernames are in the left side of the screen?
I guess the different postcount is because of the posts that couldn't be moved?
And why isn't there any indication that a thread contains a poll in the subforums?

Question: would it be possible to allow registered users to edit their description? What do I mean? Well right under the rank cones there's a description that changes according to the rank, Big Cone-Huna after 500 for instance. Can this be made into an editable field so that users can add their own description? All of this is related to the new forum of course.

and we could also try the ability to change the user name on request to a moderator.

and most importantly, we need more and better emotion icons in the posting section, a WYSIWYG editor for the wiki and the forum (to make posts) and an ability to attach attachments. they can help us a lot...

Postby The Dude  » 17 Jul 2007 11:04

Hello everyone!!!!

Havent been here in awhile but im glad to see the site finally upgraded to version 3!!

Sadly i forgot my PASSWORD on my other account :(

I wish there was a default PHPBB skin to use as this one seems a little confusing....

Take care :)

This one is the default phpBB 3.0 skin. If you want the old phpBB 2.0 I can enable it too (since it's shipped with phpBB 3.0) ... but I really like this one better, once I've got used to it.

You can now select the old theme in the "User Control Panel". I haven't tried it but I expect it to work as it's shipped in the default phpBB 3.0 installer.

Well I found out why my QT4 thread is out of whack, since the upgrade I can only add up to 10 URLs per post. :( Is there a way to change that, because it's hard to keep updates on that thread the way it is now. :?:

I've changed the limit to "unllimited". I tried to see if it was possible to configure that per user. Since it's not (unless someone shows me otherwise), if we ever notice that spammers strike again due to this limit being lifted, I'll have to revert it to some "low" value.
