select prefrences.
click on the [+]video and then scroll to [+]Subtitles/OSD
Youll see a box in there 9called Use Subtitle File) to point vlc in the vicinity of the subtitle file.
alternatively youll see another box (subtitle autodetection path) with ./subtitles
Make a folder some place on your drive to store your avis and subtitle files and point that box in that folders direction.
Now make sure the .srt file is named EXACTLY the same as the avi file and it will load them automagicaly.
Eg Azumanga_Daioh_04[v2](AAC)[KAA][2306ED4F].avi and Azumanga_Daioh_04[v2](AAC)[KAA][2306ED4F].srt in c:\videos
