Steaming and saving files

Postby nic » 13 Apr 2005 01:07

warning: not an expert, easily confused...

I am running a linux server to stream multicast TV that I get from my cable provider. Streaming is working fine with the default VLC settings.

I have tried to save files of the clients which also works fine.

My problem is that the resolution of the stream is probably too high and the saved files are huge (13 megs for less than 10 seconds). I have tried to use transcoding but when I do the clients cannot decode the steams. I usually see a semi-garbled image for 1-2 seconds and then the vlc screen freezes.

What I would like to do is either transcode the stream on the server so that I can save video footage on the client with files of reasonable size (approx. <1gig/hour) or even better stream at full resolution from the server and transcode and save on the client.

I it possible?

Thanks

yes, that is possible but can need quite a lot of CPU power (depending on the video quality/size/codec you want to transcode to). To minimize disk space you should try transcoding to mpeg4 (doiing so real time can be difficult ... depends on your CPU)
