it's in the FAQ http://www.videolan.org/doc/faq/en/index.html#id2514397

it says: remove the folder HOME/Library/Preferences/VLC

btw. why are you using 10.1?

I suppose that you try to use VLC 0.8.1 on Mac OS X 10.1. That's not possible and won't be made possible by anything. The last couple of versions of VLC simply require 10.2 or higher. The last release for 10.1 is 0.7.0 as stated on the download page for the OSX-port.

Btw. I highly recommend you to update to 10.2 or even 10.3 because they are much faster (even on slower hardware), easier to use and support much more software on the contrary to 10.1. Additionally, at least 10.2 can be bought on ebay for very little money.
