a problem with the latest VideoLan

I downloaded the latest version; whenever I play a media for 5 mins, I get the screensaver. I didn't have problems with the previous versions. I know I could set my screensaver to "never", but there got to be an alternative solution.

That's broken in the current release and will be fixed in the upcoming one. Feel free to download a nightly build to prove that, but note that these versions contain various known and most likely even some unknown bugs, so they might not be as stable and fast as you would expect from us.
