Streaming from a firewire source

Hello!
Could someone tell me, which would be the best solution to stream from a digital video camera a life event, over a firewire connection to ip? I'm using linux.
I tried some possibilities, as suggested in this forum, such as dvgrab | vlc -.
They didn't really work. Should I also try to vls ? Or is there something else I missed?
