VLC was built for DVB over IP.

Can you post a link to this specification?

anyways VLC uses MPEG-TS UDP streaming (among others) as far as i know this is the same technology that is used in the DVB-IP specification.

VLC supports much of the technology in this DVB-IP standard. What it does not do however is provide much of the information that is/can/should be added to these technologies according to this protocol.

As such it is probably interoperable as a client with DVB-IP, but cannot function as a server for such services (actually logical since VLCs range of services is still pretty limited at best).

With some intensive development by interested parties, VLC could support all this. I'm not saying it will be a quick job, but there really are no technical limits as to why VLC wouldn't be able to function as such.
