Some Set Top Box vendors suggest using VLC on to stream content to them (e.g. Amino). And some streaming solution suggest using VLC on the client side (e.g. Anevia).
One of the major French ISP uses VLC as a server for its ADSL-based TV broadcasting service. They have proprietary box on the client side.
Usually, VLC is used on the "other" side, and there's a proprietary solution on the "own" commercial side.
