VLC with Fedora Core 3 x86_64

Postby Buford » 24 Jan 2005 21:52

Hi,
I'm rather a linux newbie. I tried to install VLC on Fedora Core 3 x86_64.
I tried the i386 Version but failed. I downloaded ~30 rpm's and wanted to install them but there were many missing. Even one by one installing them did not function.
So I downloaded the VLC x86_64 Version, wich is only one file and had to search for all the dependencies by hand. It took me several hours to be able to install vlc. No it is installed but it is still not working.
Hallo? What is the user expected to do? Do one want to keep people away from linux.
The WinXP Version of VLC is running with two clicks. Installing programs on linux is a torture. It seems that the distributors cannot build anything working.
In the beginning, I was (positively) surprised, how many programs there are for linux. Now I am surprised how many are absolutly not running.

rpm's are just a mess. That's not a fault of linux, it's a problem with the package management a distribution has chosen.

I usually find debian and gentoo to be much better in this respect.

(aka. Redhat, Slackware, SuSE, Fedora all suck for still using such an incredible deranged packet management system)
Don't use PMs for support questions.
