Distribution in 7-zip

Postby Spirit » 23 Jan 2005 21:44

I'd glad to see VLC distributed compressed in 7-zip. As I'm able to compress VLC 0.8.1 win32 to 5 227 044 bytes. See http://www.7-zip.org. Even on Linux I was able to run and work in 7-zip GUI through Wine. I like rather downloading noninstalation versions but in classic zip it's quite big (nearly 2 times bigger than in 7-zip). Even I'm able to compress it through 7-zip to zip deflate64 to 95% of distributed file. Even in tar.gzip it's 94% of distr. file. Smaller file makes easier to distribute so it can be popular as "small GUI player of many formats".

I support your suggestion
but you have to think that not everyone has a 7-zip compatible packer installed

But size of 7z file (VLC) + size of 7-zip executable is still smaller than zip file. You can also download both every time when new versions released. It's still worth it. Even I can make zip file smaller than original distibuted so take advantage of that.

Even the concept of mirrors often confuses users. We would like to stick to as few different download packages as possible.
