Postby sbcollegeguy » 01 Apr 2004 03:00

am new to VLC. I have a ibook g3 with 10.2.8 OS. when i open a .avi file this message pops up
You may experience problems playing a video track in "Identity_(2003).FiNaLe.ShareReactor.avi" because the required compressor could not be found. would you like to close the movie or continue?
i click continue hit play and only audio comes through but no video does. i have put the VLC stuff in my quicktime folder. my computer opens it in quicktime and i cant open it in another player, i also have window media and real player. if i need to open it in another player let me know how. i played around with pref. in VLC and quicktime. this problem is very frustrating and any help would be much appreciated

It's giving you a proper answer -- doesn't support the particular video CODEC used.

.avi is just a generic Audio-Video container, where it is agreed/understood that the application generating the .avi file will provide information about its internal structure -- which particular audio and video CODECs are used, data rates, frame size --- in specific locations. Inside, you have both audio and video blocks, which may be coded using many different formats. It just happens that the particular file you're trying to play is one where VLC does support the audio CODEC, but doesn't support the video.

For example, something popping up frequently in recent comments is an inability to play IV50 (Indeo Video 5) formatted video. It's true, it doesn't.

http://videolan.org/vlc/features.html tells you what it supports.

If I understand you correctly, you have copied VLC in your QuickTime folder like a plugin. But VLC is _no_ plugin. VLC has nothing to do with the playback possibility of DivX files in the QuickTime player.

You have to launch VLC and open your file with it. Then VLC will likely be able to play it, since ShareReactor-files are mostly encoded with DivX.
