Play Dvd:s on Video Lan

Is it really true that I can play dvd movies with my regular cd rom player just by using Video Lan software?
And if thats the case how does it work?

No, don't be stupid! You must have a dvd drive to read data off of a dvd.

yes, you have to update the laser pickup, get a set at wal-mart for ~10$ then vlc can read dvd´s in raw mode.
