vlc vs wmp

Postby Fabio » 15 Mar 2004 08:37

Hi,

i'm a newbie of vlc and i'm exploring what the software can do.
Now i've two questions i can't answer: why should i have windows media player if i have vlc? It is possible to set vlc as my default viewer in winXP home edition?

Thanks.

Fabio,

Video file formats are still in rapid release with new codecs (encode/decode algorithms) in both the proprietary & standards-based arenas frequently released. Whoever encodes a movie gets to choose what format & codec to use. To the end-user that means no one player (or even 2 players, unfortunately) will play all formats+encodings. Digital movies are still new & under increasing usage & until the industry matures a bit we'll all have to flounder around with multiple players & constantly updated codec bundles. For now I recommend you keep several players handy.
