Going crazy before successing in compilation

Postby Zak » 11 Mar 2004 12:14

I'm a very experienced *NIX admin / programmer.

This morning I needed some audio client just to hear 1 min of f.ed ASX. From site, they suggest VLC (ohh! Not only the damned Win Media Player, good, let's follow).

Trying to install VLC from MDK 9.1 RPMS... Pratically you need the 9.2, since in contrib/ for 9.1 it's impossible to resolve quicly all the dependencies (libdvdcss is missing and dvd part seem impossible to disable)

Ok, let's do as usually, ./configure, make, make install... WHAT?! Shall I download about 10 tarballs, and compile and the rest before becoming able just to hear a damned audio file?!

Wouldn't be easier a unique tgz containing all the stuffs? It's so that simple!

And I perfectly understand what I'm doing, I don't even try to imagine a newbye who's just looking for a player... Probably another poor devil who would conclude "Ok, Linux is just to hack, let's switch back to Windows..."

I'm so frustrated this morning... :-(
