I've got 98lite with Opera 7 running and BAD bugs with VLC

Postby StoneChinq » 01 Dec 2003 18:15

i'm running a 98lite micro install (with the 95 shell), with java-enabled Opera 7 and a Netscape browser in the background (for plugins).

i've installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled the VLC now about four times and i just have NO idea what could be going wrong. At first, it simply crashed often. Now, however, it's unable to play any files properly, and only a very few at all (avi's, etc).

AVI's are the only format that'll play any video, although i get some audio off of mpg's; and yet, the AVI's only play a very thoroughly filtered image on a black screen, improperly cropped and "wrapped around" the screen so that the right half of the screen is playing on the left, the left half of the screen is playing in the middle, and the entire image is shifted halfway down the playing area so that the bottom half of the screen isn't visible at all.

i'm not a newbie, but i'm not by any means a computer whiz, either. I can follow instructions well, and would much appreciate it if someone could help me solve these problems. i've tried cleaning the registry and reinstalling Opera and VLC, but that's about all i know how to do.

There are many things that you can try to do:
  • 1) Remove the preferences file (http://www.videolan.org/doc/faq/en/vide ... html#AEN27)
    2) Update DirectX and the drivers of your graphic card
    3) When playing a file that isn't working, open the "View->Messages" dialog box, it will give you more details about the errors...
BTW, Opera has nothing to do with the problems you have with VLC :)

Thanks --

so i guess, then, i need DirectX to run VideoLan?

Running 98lite, that becomes optional. I opted out. i'll go ahead and put it on, tho', and see what happens.

Thanx --
