You don't need CODECs with VLC?!

Postby atreid » 28 Mar 2004 16:01

Is it true you could install a brand new windows, install vlc, and it would play all files mpg/mpg2/xvid/divx/etc without the need to install any codecs at all because vlc would have them all bundled into the software?

I always used vlc, but I also use other players so I have all my latest codecs installed, and I was very surprised when someone told me that...

IS IT TRUE?!

thx 8)

VLC can't play everything...

Thx for the answer...

I know VLC doesn't play anything... I'm betting in order to play quicktime files you still need to at least install quicktime... of course I might be wrong...
I think VLC doesn't play RealMedia files unless you also install realplayer, since the codecs themselves are copyrighted... I think...

But is VLC using its own codecs by default, or let's say if I also have a XVID codec installed, it will use its own codec as a last resort and will then use the one I installed?
