Watch TV on Laptop connected via Lan to a Desktop w. TVcard?

Postby martin » 28 Feb 2004 09:39

Hi everybody

I'd like to watch TV on my Laptop, but my TV-card ist connected to my Destop. Therefore I'm looking for a Server-SW to send the "TV-Stream" to my wireless-LAN and a Client-SW to get it displayed on my Laptop.

Ist this possible with VideoLAN?

Yes, it is, but you will have to be careful when selecting the bitrate of the video for it to work over the Wireless LAN

Please have a look at the VideoLAN Howto for more information

VLC:
Use streaming Wizard on the PC with the TV card.
Step 1 -- Pick DirectShow Input. Do a Refresh on both Video and Audio, to get VLC to see your capture device, then select it.
Step 2 -- Select UDP as the streaming method. If you only want to go from PC1 to PC2, type in PC 2's IP address in the space next to "UDP". If you want a general multicast ('broadcast', multiple PCs able to hook in simultaneously), and it's your home LAN, type in a multicast IP address, such as 239.20.30.40. (you don't have to change your PC addresses to that number -- it acts like a telphone party line)
Make sure to select Transcoding Options -- Check both the Video and Audio options. The default bitrates are probably fine, though you might wish to nudge them up a bit if it's hard-wired.
Step 3 -- Just press Start.

On PC2, select Open Network Stream. If the Server had plugged in your PC's address, then the default is fine (the "UDP" option that only has Port Number" next to it) -- press OK and it should open. If the Server was using a multicast address (239.20.30.40), select the UDP Multicast option, type in 239.20.30.40 in the address space next to it, then press OK.

For testing, in Step 2 there is a Play Locally checkbox -- you can check that as well as the stream option, and it will open a local window.

No idea which video input source is the one you want -- try the Conexant selection, then if that doesn't work try the other one.

If it turns out that, say, Conexant is the one you want, and you want to default to that, you can save the setting in Settings -- Preferences. Click the Advanced Options checkbox, then in the frame on the left go to Modules -- Access -- Dshow. On the right hand side you will see selction boxes for Video and audio. Select the video input you want as your directshow default, then click the Save button on the bottom of the screen.

Next time you open VLC, your video input will be at the default -- you don't have to re-refresh/select. The only oddity is that VLC doesn't store the device name -- you'll see a blank next to video device name -- it's OK. The VLC coders know of this.

The defaults are fine for starters.
Video -- mp4v -- 1024 kbps -- scale 1
Audio -- mpga -- 192 kbps -- channels 2

You don't have to transcode if you're playing a dvd or file that VLC already "understands", but I believe the DirectShow stuff comes across "raw" -- no CODEC -- unless your video-grabbing card specifically states that it's doing compression.

Once you have your video streaming, you might want to try closing the stream then redoing it with a bandwidth of, say, 2048 kbps, to enhance the picture quality. Realize that this directly uses BW on your LAN connection -- it's a trade of quality vs. bandwidth.

Once you've verified that you have the right video source choice, you can check if you're streaming OK using the "server" PC, the one with the video card. Run a streaming session, but don't check the "play locally" button -- in Step 2 you either use the multicast address or put in the address of your server PC (so that it's streaming to itself). Open a second VLC session on the same PC (the server), and do an Open Network Stream. -- you should see the window open and actually play the streamed, transcoded, information.

(Note -- this chews lots of CPU, running two sessions on one computer, doing both encoding and decoding. What you see/hear may be a bit junky, but it will let you know that you've got the basic streaming working).

Mostly green window on the PC1 "client" session is OK. If you are getting video to PC2 you don't have to use the "client"-session-on-server-PC trick -- you actually are getting basic streaming OK.

On the Streaming Wizard, when you select the DirectShow input tab you need to pick the proper audio device as well as video device. Do a Refresh next to Audio device, then pick your sounds source. Similar to video, if you have a couple of possibilities just try each one.

When you start the streaming (Step 3), you still have the VLC widget toolbar -- click on "Audio" (to the right of "Settings") -- need to make sure it's enabled. (When I play an MPEG file, for example, the Audio dropdown displays a list with "Audio Track" the first choice -- make sure that when you select Audio Track it doesn't show "Disabled").

Similar to DirectShow video, you can set up defaults for Audio. In Settings -- Preferences, you can click the "Enabled" button on the top-level "Audio choice, then select "Save" so that audio will always be "on". If you go to Modules -- Access -- Dshow, you can set a default audio device.

(Since you have basic streaming down, to debug your audio you don't even have to do streaming. Open - File, then click the DirectShow Input; from there you can try the different audio devices, see how things open on the "server" PC.

One more odd thing could be to make sure that your TV card itself has audio enabled. For example, I work with an Osprey 210 frame grabber. VlLC works wonderfully, but I still use the Osprey's own control application to do the detailed settings (pick which video input to use, set the video capture frame size, let it know that it's NTSC vs. PAL, etc.)
