Cannot watch, because it's too slow

When I run vlc --x11-display 0 (I am using vesa driver because of TV out and '--x11-display 0' is needed to display subtitles properly), it's impossible to watch the movie since it's like a slideshow - it's really slow!

I have 512mb ram, Athlon 2,4+, Radeon IGP 320 64mb shared.

Can you please advise how to fix the problem?
