VLC Player shows blank screen - help!

I just installed the VLC Player on Windows XP. I'm trying to play .avi files on it. I have a shortcut to the .avi file I want to play on my desktop, but when I double click it to play in the VLC Player, the Player opens on the desktop, but I just have a blank gray screen, and nothing ever happens. Any help or suggestions at all I will appreciate, because I'm just stumped right now. Also, I do have the xvid codec installed if that is of any help.
