Only one istance?

There's a way to say to vlc " I want only one istance of you!" ?
Or a flag from the command line... to say "Open it in an active istances"

I'm on a Gnu/linux box (kernel 2.6.10) with the distro Gentoo..
And the Vlc player varsion I use is the 0.80
