Replacement for digital SAT receivers ?

Postby kaufmann » 28 Oct 2004 13:18

Hello together!

I'm asking myself, if a project like Videolan, maybe together with commerical set top boxes (like from amino) is ready to be a real alternativ or replacement for a conventional digital SAT TV installation?

With a conventional digital SAT TV installation i mean something like this:
- One SAT dish with a SAT switch-matrix for 4 or 8 SAT receivers.
- star topology with 75ohm SAT coaxial cable from the switch matrix to every room.
- A digital SAT receiver in every room. And a TV to watch the program.

Is something like this also possible with a videolan solution? What restrictions do i have? Must the end-user have knowledge about the technique, or can he simply choose a program with a remote-control?

I would like to install digital SAT TV in our house. Every room already has a 100Mbps switched Ethernet connection. At the moment i'm thinking about a Streaming solution without conventional SAT cabeling. My plan is to have one videolan server after the dish with about 2 or 3 PC-card receivers to be able to stream up to 2 or 3 different programs. But i have more than 2 or 3 end-users. The end-users are using this server only from time to time, so i don't think i will have more than three program requests at the same time. But i don't want to have fix programs for every stream. The end-user should be able to choose between all digital tv-programs. I would also like to install set top boxes in some rooms because some end-users don't have a PC or PC knowledgement.

Could someone please explain the dynamical stream allocation?
Is it possible, and if so, how does it work?

Thanks in advance.
Michael

Well,
this is amazing topic and possible solution to the problem would be quite interesting.

Is the videolan solution an answer to two outlined questions:
1.
would each TV box (in different room) be able to connect to the videolan server through LAN?

2.
would each TV/user be able to choose between different programs?
