distorted video length/width ratio

When playing different videos in videolan, the length/width ratio seems often to be wrong and the image is distorted, to wide or to narrow. It was correct when installing videolan, but I think I have messed up something. Sometimes setting ratio to 4:3 or 16:9 will fix the problem, but not always. Have tried to reinstall viedolan, but it did not fix my problem. Can I reset videolan so the correct length/width ratio in the video is recognized by videolan automatically?

hmm i had the same problem, but i assume the problem is not vlc, but the actual video file. How do you fix the aspect ratio from vlc? Some video files I have are too squished vertically

Is it true that that function of changing the aspect ratio has disappeared in version 0.80? It would have been nice if you could change the aspect ratio to any desired value.

No the function is still there.

Enable the ADVANCED OPTIONS in the app's preferences.

Then go to "Video".

The very last entry is an empty field where you can put in the aspect ratio (eg 16:9).

You obviously have to STOP the movie you were playing and restart it to make the settings active.
