poblems with video

I have recently downloaded VLC. When I try to play a video in avi I only have the sound and no picture? I have windows XP and Nvidia Blaster 5 FX5600 Ultra card, updated. Pls anyone tell me whats wrong.

Open the "messages" window before playing and look for error messages here.

It might be a format that vlc can't decode

Do you have this problem with every video ?

I do have this problem with every file. Couldn't see what was wrong. those files that Quicktime or WMP can play work fine in those programs, but not in VLC. Any ideas what I could do? running OSX 10.3.5
