Then there might be a bug in opengl? Or the radeon driver sucks? Because it looks much better if I set the video from Automatic or Opengl to XCB...

Same issue here, I am running the latest version of VLC Player 3.0.11.1 and my OSX is 10.14.6. My Mac Pro is a 5,1, running 12-Core 3.46, Ram 128GB, GPU: ATI Radeon 5770 1G MB. The same video will play in Quicktime with no issues, so what gives ?
