I'm trying to get VLC to play AAC 5.1 surround encoded MKV's but it just plays through stereo. I have confirmed it does work with some DTS test file I downloaded. I'm on linux with SPDIF output using ALSA output over Playback through PulseAudio. Does VLC even support AAC surround?

The problem is that if I include the --spdif option to do the AC3 passthrough what I am receiving is still PCM 2.0. Connecting to ...
please is there a way to force spdif audio playback to 44.1kHz in VLC even when the source material is not 44.1kHz? I've seen various resampling settings in VLC, but none of them allow me to set the target sample rate. Other applications ...
... try different alsa options (in vlc, e.g. analog stereo etc.) and also play between direct use of alsa or pulse audio. Try also the option "--spdif" or "--no-spdif", especially with ac3 (normally "--no-spdif" should be better but this is also the default unless you ...
... why I am having such problems. I tried connecting the output of the a52 module to the HDMI PCM interface the way it's supposed to when an explicit SPDIF interface isn't defined, but it just makes the speakers click briefly before failing with file writing problems. ... main decoder error: failed to create audio output When VLC is used as a standalone player, I have no problem to set default audio device (HDMI or SPDIF in my case). Pulse isn't a practical solution for SPDIF on my system. It is actually quite easy once you understand how it works. You configure vlc to use pulseaudio (preferences or the option "--aout pulse") and provided that your pulseaudio ...
There are no settings for S/PDIF in the Pulse plugin preferences any more than device selection or channel mapping, since all of that is stored in the PulseAudio configuration. As for the ALSA bug, it will be addressed when someone figures out what the problem is, and solves it with a patch. I don't...
