Anyone know how to do this on Mac OS X (10.6.6) and VLC 1.1.6 ?

is there any way at all to fix this in 1.1.6?

try resetting all your hotkeys to the default. I had the same problem after trying to set a jump value in the advanced hotkey settings page.

Preferences / Hotkeys / Reset All

Cmd-I or right-click "get info". Change the "open with" option, then just below that option box is a button with the text, "Change All...". Click that button, and all videos of this type will be changed to open with VLC.

have the same problem, but also...

the options to change the jump length are editable. However, after editing the jump length and saving, all other customized options are reset. For example, after saving new jump length, the spacebar can no longer be used to start/stop playback.
