I think I gather that you are suggesting that by ensuring that for instance, the center channel is there, we can get louder dialogues... but the DRC feature is, as far as I konw, codec-independent. I don't know how it is achieved but it takes what's there and compresses it to rise the v...

Sorry to post this here but it really is elinghtening... The Dynamic Range Compression (DRC) feature is not esoteric at all: it is the only featre that keeps me watching DVDs on Nero Showtime rather than on VLC.
