Re:

My thought would be that you're dealing with NAT (router) issues. UDP/RTP/RTSP do just fine if both computers are on the same network (i.e. in 192.168 land on the LAN, or if both computers are on an outside connection). HTTP provides functionality to traverse through routers, however (i.e. it would ...

Re:

If you're on your LAN (i.e. living in 192.168.... IP land), then you're only going to be able to stream to someone who has an 'outside' connection; i.e. not behind a NAT. Given that all other parties are on an outside connection, UDP and HTTP will work just the same, albeit HTTP will be slower. Howe...

Recording Continuous Stream In Chunks

What I'd like to do is have VLC do its usual 'stream to file' bit, but rather than one behemoth of a file for a continuous stream, I'd much rather it go into smaller files (i.e. create a new file for every hour recorded, or a new file every 100 MB's, etc.)

How ought I go about accomplishing this?

Pan/Tilt/Zoom Camera Control

Has any work been done pertaining to control of an external pan/tilt/zoom camera, either via USB or RS-232?

I'm envisioning something akin to:

screen:// stream

I've been trying to make use of the screen capture/stream feature, to no avail. It does indeed capture the screen, but only refreshes on the receiving end (or partially refreshes - it's typically just assorted blocks that go through) every 5-10 seconds or so. I've tried playing with the Screen setti...

Not Uh-Oh

Au contraire, apparently it's just one click to go full screen now - two clicks just sends me right back where I was.

I'm duly impressed - that was indeed the problem. Not exactly sure what's being changed, but whom am I to argue with success?

Is there going to be a detriment to leaving it set to Windows GDI?

Display Error w/ Multiple Instances of VLC

Greetings, My problem is this: Whether playing two files, or two streams in separate instances of VLC, one of them always stretches completely wide across the screen. It's as if it's obeying the height parameter, but the width parameter has gone to heck in a handbasket. If I've only got one file/str...

RTSP vs. HTTP Streaming

Can RTSP streaming traverse routers/NAT's the way HTTP streaming does? I was hoping for something a bit faster than the relative slowness that is HTTP streaming.

Streaming With The Mozilla Plugin

Just to buck the trend, thought I'd post something not regarding ActiveX ;-) I haven't yet found an example of anyone who has successfully streamed using the Mozilla plugin. I would really love to give this a try; I'm doing it now through Internet Explorer with the ActiveX plugin (using a Javascript...

Re:

Try forcing 'Device Properties' under 'Advanced Options' in the 'Open Capture Device' menu. Clicking 'OK' through the resulting windows fixed the problem for me. Just a work around though - if you download a recent nightly build, this seems to have been fixed: nightlies.videolan.org

Alternatively, I was hoping that I could do hardware encoding beforehand; this would seem to be a sensible solution to the problem. Open Capture Device w/out Device Properties

Previously, I had only used webcams as directshow capture devices. Everything worked just fine. Now, I'm using an Composite A/V to USB box that works quite nicely, with one small caveat. If I don't have 'Device Properties' checked off under 'Advanced Options' in the Open Capture Device menu, the sys...

Re:

I would love to! Alas, I'm afraid VLC won't even try to send the stream across the network if it hasn't been compressed in some way, shape, or form. i.e. If I check off the options for video and audio codec, it takes up 2% of my network bandwidth, however, if I deselect just the video codec, this go...

Low Compression Codec OR No Codec?

All the Codecs that come with VLC seem to be rather processor intensive, and, I presume, costly in the time in the few hundred milliseconds they take to compress the stream. VLC seems to necessitate some kind of encoding when streaming over UDP with MPEG-TS. I'd rather it not encode/compress the fil...

Hard-Coded HTTP Delay

I recall coming across past postings regarding there being a hard coded HTTP delay bulit into VLC - I can't seem to find a post referencing this again though. If this is indeed the case, which file is it in, and is there a good reason for it existing?

Much thanks,

Scott

Screen Input

Pertaining to: Preferences->Input/Codecs->Screen

When VLC references 'Screen Input', is that in reference to itself, or the user's screen? i.e. Can VLC provide a stream of whatever's going on on my desktop?

Setting Preferences Via Command Line

I couldn't find any documentation on changing items found in the Preferences menu from the command line. I presume it can be done - how would one go about this?

Gratefully,

Scott
