Sorry, I was being stupid! Anyway, found the folder and deleted it.

However, that made no difference - nor did installing the very latest version of VLC Player (v.2.04.)

Any more ideas?

Yes, it was my security - ie, PC Tools Firewall Plus! It had gone beserk and was blocking everything in sight. I gave it a firm slap and it now no longer objects to VLC player and a host of other 'non-offensive' programmes.

From the official VLC site - here. However, I did download various copies of VLC from other sites - but it made no difference. They all froze, forcing me to re-boot, etc.
