on that ftp I can already see some mkv files, anime (jap) movies, those beginning with [Shinsen-Subs]; I guess my mkv files might be encoded like those ones.

ok, my problem seemed to be solved, but it's not unfortunately.
I set the default locations in the options..but when I press the play button, VLC goes and search the dvd in the X drive!
