on that ftp I can already see some mkv files, anime (jap) movies, those beginning with [Shinsen-Subs]; I guess my mkv files might be encoded like those ones.

tonight I'll try and upload one of my files, though.

0.8.4a released, but same error
also with the latest nightlies I can't properly play mkv files :?

that's what I wonder myself.. anyway, there's an annoying but with playing mkv files. try the following 1) open an mkv file 2) the video won't run, just the audio..so (I'm traslating, my gui is in Italian) Video -> video trace -> disable 3) re-enable it --> VLC will crash :? can you reproduce that, ...

could you try with 0.8.4 final ?
tried. with the same negative result! :?

isn't there any workaround? why does it happens? hasn't support for mkv's been tested enough?

The Windows version of VLC has an entry in the Start Menu that completely resets your VLC setup. It is called: "Reset VLC defaults and quit."
Where do I find that? I use the standalone version of VLC (no install)

ok, my problem seemed to be solved, but it's not unfortunately.
I set the default locations in the options..but when I press the play button, VLC goes and search the dvd in the X drive! :x

how can that be?

please help!

it seems to keep the 0.8.4 version of VLC

Input/Codecs -> General
is the right place to set one's preferences for the default devices :)

how to set default letter for DVD player

I have 3 on my explorer: X (virtual one), Y and Z

and VLC has X as the default one

where can I go and tell him to use Z?

I searched through the options but could find anything suitable
