Graphic Equalizer and spatializer (enable) also works sometimes but doesnt hold settings unlike the video effects (image adjust) which sets and holds settings generally till the next session. I think I understood your query. You need to pause VLC using a mouse click from a distance.
I'm using VLC version 1.1.0 Have you tried right clicking on the movie and choosing "pause"?
