Basically I want to avoid having to create a separate file (consisting of just the specific clip) from the original media ...

I use VLC in full screen mode. When I play a video by launching VLC from Windows Explorer (double clicking on the video file/right-clicking on the file and selecting "Play"/pressing <Return> with the file selected) VLC plays in the background, ie behind all the other applications before it...
