if you mean the old skins interface, run vlc with -I skins, if you mean the wxwindows interface, run it with -I wx. And on windows, you can switch the interface from the popup menu (between skins, skins2 and wxwindows)

The links you are talking about are only the _tools_ to build vlc, not the source code ! See the paragraph "Get VLC" at http://developers.videolan.org/vlc/. If you get the source from a tarball you can run ./configure, but if you get the SVN version you have to run ./bootstrap first.

no it is not possible, but if there is a need for that it could be implemented quite easily I think...

There is a bug in the wxwindows library which causes this segfault when you try to switch between wx and skins interface. Try to run directly the skins interface with ./vlc -I skins2.
If it still segfaults (it shouldn't happen!) please compile vlc in debug mode to get a core dump.

Indeed wxwindows is enabled by default in configure, but it really doesn't seem to have been built (you can check with vlc -l | grep wx).
Isn't there any error message during the configure ?
By the way the skins interface should appear anyway, right ?

Can you describe the problem more precisely ? Which interface are you using ? How are you "killing" the window and what appears instead ?

FYI, the skins2 plugin in the CVS version of vlc now supports skinnable video output.

if your skin gives you an access to the "Preferences" dialog, you can save the preferences with this dialog.
Otherwise, edit your vlcrc and put:
[main]
intf=skins2

If you compiled vlc with esd support everything should work fine. But first upgrade your vlc, 0.3.1 is a really really old version !
