It was, yes it deleted the cache-2 file rather than moving it as a setting file to be put back on next run.

Turns out I was using VLCPortable from someplace I consider reputable, and I was able to recompile their launcher so that it copied and restored the ***-i686.cache-2 file to the appropriate place. Yes, as well sometimes the file has different names, ie the random number/letter sequence changes.

But every time I close vlc this file disappears. And the file name periodically changes.
