Does this happen with other video files besides mpg1? Have you tried Divx, mp4, ogg? Also, try posting a message log from the computer you're trying to view the stream from. To get to the message log, go to View -> Messages...

Here are some simple instructions. Bear in mind a firewall will prevent the streaming from working. You must disable any firewall you are using on your windows xp machine to see the stream. 1) on your mac computer, run VLC then go to File -> Streaming Wizard... 2) a dialog with three buttons will co...

I don't know enough to say whether this is done with udp or rtp streaming. However, I know it's not done much with the http VOD streaming. Pretty much if your bandwidth isn't enough to accomodate the bitrate of the stream, it ain't goin' stream.

The trick to this guys is making sure that the proper input is selected under the recording configuration for your soundcard. VLC just blindly uses the default input mechanizm for recording when you specify your soundcard under the audio section in DirectShow. Also, if your card is not full-duplex, ...

IP broadcast vs Multicast

Okay, sometimes I feel that I don't know as much as I should... I plan to use VLC to stream our cable through our house via IP so anybody with a computer and a wireless card can use it. I figured the easiest way to do this would be to stream to our subnet broadcast (192.168.1.255 on our private netw...

You can only broadcast one stream at a time with vlc (unless you multicast stream, but that's another story that's liable to monopolize your network connection). You can stream more than one thing by running more than one copy of vlc. However, with your vid cam, it's likely only one software program...

Another thing I would try is reducing the scale of the video, I imagine that'll drop the bandwidth needed somewhat.

I myself however, don't know much about transcoding video to proper bitrates for streaming and would love a document with some tips and general guidlines :-D.

Hint hint devs.

I don't know much about VLC implementation, nor much about mpeg container format or codec specifics, but my best guess is you should try the messages window under the View menu.

If that doesn't give you the information you need, there probably isn't a way currently.

Well, that's because you were sending the data to udp://myip only and you weren't sending the data to the other machine. VLC uses broadcast streaming. If you'd like to implement streaming on demand like what's seen at websites like cspan and cnn, you'll have to run a web server and provide http link...

Well, installing a whole web server might be overkill if you're just serving video to some friends. VLC comes with one. It's been mentioned elsewhere on the forum where to look for the documentation, but I'll post it here since I'm such a nice guy :-). http://www.videolan.org/doc/vlc-user-guide/en/h...

In several places in the docs a "multicast IP address" is mentioned. What is that? For example, if I am streaming using VLC on one machine, so I use that machine's IP in order to multicast the stream? Multicast IP streaming is *not* what you want. The only people who want to use multicast...

The latest version of VLC works with video capture devices in Windows. You'll be able to broadcast the video via transcoding it to some format.

I've used it with my Web Cam.

Are there different videos to be played? Or are these all going to be playing the same video? If there are different files to play, VLS is a better candidate for this. VLS is specifically designed to accomidate multiple broadcasting of multiple sources to multiple channels. VLC can only stream one s...

No, try Darwin Streaming Server. VLS/VLC are for broadcast/multicast streaming.

However, VLC will view RTSP streams. It just can't create them.
