Re: New version cannot play second title on DVD.

This looks to me like a boilerplate response which fails to address the fact that VLC CAN PLAY the second title just fine if I point it directly to the to the .ts file on the DVD. I.e., whatever is the problem, it is above the driver level issues which this response seems to be dealing with. I will ...

New version cannot play second title on DVD.

On March 16, VLC announced to me that it had downloaded a new version. So I let it install. I think it is broken. I made a DVD with 2 titles using DVDFlick. VLC plays the first title just fine. However, going to the second title fails. It does play the audio, but the video is stuck on a frame from t...

Why I am unable to get coarse speed increase?

Except for + the four other default hotkeys for speed ( - = [ ] ) work. I have tried to change it to something other than +. No joy.

Re: Jerky playback of 720p MPEG2 files

Are your second messages with DirectX? No. They are with "Default". Would you like to see a log with DirectX? On examining the log itself, I see: avcodec debug: D3dCreateDevice succeed avcodec debug: OurDirect3DCreateDeviceManager9 Success! avcodec info: obtained IDirect3DDeviceManager9 a...

Re: Jerky playback of 720p MPEG2 files

My OS is 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium. I should have also mentioned that my screen resolution is 1360x768, the native resolution of my TV. However, the symptom occurs even when I am not running VLC in full screen mode. After seeing the messages, I have learned a lot. I have appended, at the end of ...

Re: Make audio track default to English

You can put the preferred language in the preferences then. Put "en" That works! Even though I had actually looked for a relevant configuration setting, I had missed that "Preferred audio language" entry field under "Tracks". (I think I did not look very hard because I...

Re: Make subtitles default to off.

This problem does not arise with all files that have subtitles. Aside from the handful of (closely related) files on which I have experienced the problem, I was unable to find any other files (of which I have a great many) that even have a subtitle stream. I must admit that I had just assumed that ...

Re: Make audio track default to English

Does VLC recognize the channel languages? In the Fox case, Track 1 is labeled on the selection menu as "Espanol" and Track 2 is labeled as "English". In the cases I have encountered most often for the defaulted-to Track 1 (mostly college football), there are no announcers - only...

Re: Enable auto-sleep

Here we are, 15 months later; I am on version 2.0.2 ;and the problem persists. Since I have encountered no other program which exhibits this obnoxious behavior, it is difficult for me to believe that it would be hard to fix. I also see a very lengthy thread of folks pleading for a capability to reme...

Make subtitles default to off.

I don't know exactly what causes this, but I have encountered some H.264 files for which VLC enables subtitles. I must explicitly disable them every time I start playing such a file. This problem does not arise with all files that have subtitles. It seems to me that I should be able to configure VLC...

Make audio track default to English

For some reason, the files I record from my local Fox station have the English audio track as track 2; but VLC always defaults to track 1. (Track 1 may be announcerless, which was really confusing at first. When track 1 is Spanish, I catch on quickly; but it is still a hassle.) Other players seem to...

Jerky playback of 720p MPEG2 files

I suspect that what I will describe here is a bug; but I will be very happy if someone can provide a workaround. I am running VLC 2.0.2 on Windows 7. My CPU is a 6 core AMD Phenom II (1055T). My GPU is ATI Radeon HD 4290. I see this problem only with recorded MPEG2 TV streams encoded at 720p. It doe...

Control for pillar color

When I play a 4:3 video full screen, VLC pillar boxes it with black pillars on my wide screen TV. I would like to be able to set an intermediate gray color for the pillars. Since Windows Media Center has such a configuration parameter, I figured that I would surely find it in VLC; but I can't find i...

Re: Spoke too soon.

So, am I interpreting this correctly?: Is it really true that if a .wtv file came from a channel that is encrypted on the cable, then VLC cannot be expected to be able to play it? My main question did not get answered. Could we try again, please? In the meantime, I have learned how to be a little m...

Spoke too soon.

The programs I was most interested in playing with VLC at first were football games. As it turns out, the files I tried first were from local broadcast stations which were clear QAM on the cable. What I have discovered is that most programs recorded from encrypted channels will not play at all in VL...

Re: Audio problems with .wtv files recorded by Media Center

Download .zip or .7z from there, extract it to some folder and start vlc.exe from that folder. Nothing will explode. With the above encouragement, I was reassured that trying a recent build in the manner described would not mess up my current installation. And YES, it does work! Quite well. It even...

Nightly build?

Nightly Build of VLC Well, actually I did find those; but I was scared off by "WARNING: The nightly builds are UNSTABLE and may not work at all. There is absolutely NO SUPPORT for it from the VideoLAN Team." So I am a bit surprised that you are steering me in that direction. Perhaps I can...

The Jeopardy wtv file works perfectly in VLC 1.2
I am really glad to hear that. I am unable to find a way to download this new version from the VideoLAN web site. When might I hope to be able to install it? Is there anything I can do in the meantime?

Sample .wtv data file

I recorded about a minute of Jeopardy to make a sample; but, in retrospect, even that seems too big. I have verified that sound does not play properly from this file either. I hope it is not an issue that this is not the same file as the one I played to get the message log. I used the VideoLan uploa...

Audio problems with .wtv files recorded by Media Center

I recently added a CableCARD tuner for my HTPC. Only Windows Media Center under Windows 7 can record material from such a device, and it records the data in .wtv files. As far as I can tell, VLC can handle the video playback from .wtv files OK; but the playback of the sound hardly works for me at al...

Enable auto-sleep

This may be Windows-specific. If I pause a playback in VLC, leaving the application window open, Windows (Windows 7, not sure about others) fails to detect inactivity which would normally cause the system to suspend, given the way I have configured it. I can explicitly tell it to go to sleep, and th...

Re: Skip to next/previous keyframe

Jump to next key frame is hard to implement with certain files, and streams (it would require full indexing). OK. But this is not a good reason for failing to implement it with those files for which it is not hard. The type of file on which I most frequently experience the symptom is .mkv encoded w...

Re: Skip to next/previous keyframe

'e' in VLC 1.0 Incorrect. "e" advances to the next video frame, not to the next keyframe. I was looking for the same thing, and a search on "vlc next-keyframe" turned up this two year old exchange. I am surprised that the error has never been corrected. As far as I can tell, VLC...

Re: Wrong installer default for preserving VLC profile

In spite of VLC_help's unsympathetic response, I note that in recent versions (starting, I think, with 1.1.8 ) the default has been changed so that the settings are not removed by default. Rationality has prevailed.
