Problem solved! I did some more searching and found the answer. Thanks to ThomasCr for posting the info! See below if you have the same problem.

I un-installed vlc then

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nvidia-vdpau/cutting-edge-multimedia
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install vlc
