Did you try to define your default-drive using the preferences ?
Settings - Preferences - Input / Codecs - General - in the middle of the page you can define your "Default devices"

Open VLC, press Ctrl+G to get the "Extended GUI" (Settings - Extended GUI).
After enabling "Adjust Image" you are able to change Hue, Contrast, Brightness, Saturation and Gamma.

Extract it into a directory of your choice and execute the "vlc.exe", that's it.

If you only have a CD/RW Drive you can't watch DVD's at all.
You need a DVD-Rom or a DVD-RW Drive.

I've got the same problem exept that the freeze only lasts 2 seconds.

You can change the settings in the config-file by using an editor.
