So in the end, just VLCs recording feature is broken. This still has nothing to do with previews (apart from the fact that whoever generates the previews, cannot parse the broken file ).

Could you open a bug report, with steps how you created the files?

VLC never generated previews in the Finder, so this is not a related issue, sorry. Well something was generating previews in the Finder. Correction, after 2 successful conversions of different file types the problem resurfaced in 2.1.1 did full uninstall/reinstall (including delete cache/pref) problem persists switching back to 2.0.8 since it works I seem to be having the same problem.
