the most repositorys are contributed from members of the projects... in ubuntu there are a lot of peoples which package also vlc in there ppa's (https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ppas) but in the moment I dont now a good ppa for vlc I try d myself, but had no time to fish packaging with all the fea...

VLC 1.1.0-pre2 works perfectly with wmap. Either your ffmpeg is too old, or you don't have the dmo .dlls ok, when I have a newer ffmpeg version i dont need the dlls, or I need both? I played today a movie with vlc 1.1-pre2 but without sound. In mplayer it works with... Im using Ubuntu Lucid Lynx...
