Thanks for the tip. I found I could play YouTube videos in this way by specifying the URL of a page to a YouTube video. However, this method did not work for Dailymotion and Vimeo (nothing played).Just open the URLs through the menu Media -> Open Network

Verbosity was set to 0, which probably explains why the message was not logged as such. However, when I tried to open a non-existent file with verbosity 0, VLC did say look at the log file, which is a bit misleading if it isn't there.Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2)
