Sometimes VLC with vaapi works worse than without it. When vaapi enabled VLC use 60-70% of CPU, when disabled — 45-50% (1920x1080, h264 in .mkv container). Also I can upload a part of this file, if necessary.

How exactly are we supposed to fix missing packages on your computer?

The autoconf M4 macros for iconv is missing that's all.

Where did it go?

I guess your system lacks the gettext development files, which causes the iconv autodetection to fail.

Why then iconv can detect encoding and a file opens, when VLC isn't running yet? I've get the error message only when VLC is already running and I click on a file in dolphin.

With the 1.1.0-pre1 tag all works fine.

Is it correct: git archive --format=tar --remote=/var/abs/local/yaourtbuild/vlc-git/src/vlc 1.1.0-pre1 > vlc.tar?

Just now I again rebuilt VLC from tarball and from git. The first works fine but the second does not.

I had this problem with 1.1.0-git too, but compiled from here http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/1.1.0/ works well. And the problem hasn't disappeared with 1.2.0-git This problem is already existed even before the 1.1.0 release. This is why I surprised, because you make the 1.1.0 tarball ...

Forgot to clarify, only one copy of VLC must be allowed in settings. Just in case.

This is fully related to the Kwin compositing, when it's disabled — all is ok.

I've rebuild VLC from git just now and problem still here. The first file always opens well (when VLC not running yet), and error occur only when I clicked on the next files when VLC already running. In error message I can see that cyrillic symbols in the file path are replaced by question marks: Чт...

VLC does not remember audio level between sessions, but I turned on this option. And I turned off the possibility of setting volume level up to 400% (in Qt interface settings) but it affected only for volume slider and I still can set the volume at 400%.

I use nvidia proprietary driver. Maybe they protects their technologies and therefore do not opens its driver. Or, perhaps, this driver violates too many patents, that it will never be opened :-) Anyway, linux has a bad graphics system, maybe even worse than its sound system is. Cease to fail in one...
