What would cause VLC to freeze when I open capture device,was ok in 1.0.5 then I switched to 1.18. I have switched the programs back and forth but the problem persists in either verson now, have to re-boot PC twice to clear it up

I like to use VLC to play a recording on my pc while using VLC to record a program from my motrorola 6200 and firewire on the same time pc. The problem is I here the sound from both programs at the same time, is there away to mute the program I am recording while watching a other program.
