Also I believe Ubuntu is *meant* to be updated as it is released, unless you are running LTS.

So if he is running 8.10, he might want to update to Karma before installing more software. It's just a cleaner upgrade path.

Ok I am confused. Why is the first thread in the Linux forum about Hardy? While that distro is technically still supported, it is really, really long in the tooth.
