I just realized this has been a year ago. It seems this change has never been realized, i.e. VLC_OBJECT_VLC is still being used instead of VLC_OBJECT_LIBVLC (I'm on Windows, VLC v1.0.3) Is there any plan on integrating this patch?

I have designed a VLC HTTP interface, especially geared towards the iPhone. It looks nice and works like a charm, but I'm not sure where to submit it so other people can use it too. I'd have attached it to this post, but attachments seem to be disabled.
