Is there another way to specify which cam you're using?

I haven't gotten a second cam yet, but that was the process I used to identify which devide I wanted to stream from with my first one.

I'm using USB web cams at this point. I haven't anything like that with USB inputs.

I don't suppose you'd know where to look for such a beast?

You could try putting an & at the end of the line. When working on the command line, this runs the command without tying up the terminal session.

So if I ran this from the command line, I'd still be able to use my prompt while VLC was running:

Code: Select all

vlc &

I'm looking at doing this too.

Did you end up having any success?

At which point does it lock up?
If you try to launch VLC with two cams plugged in, or when you try to get VLC to talk to the second one?

VLC and Multiple Sources

G'day I currently use VLC to serve a web cam that covers our reception. I've been asked to add a second camera, and I'm not 100% sure what the best course of action is going to be. On one hand, I could try to stream both sources from a single machine using two instances of VLC. The other option is t...

VLC and iSight?

I had a bit of a search through the forums, but I couldn't find anything that looked helpful. Has anybody successfully gotten a firewire iSight camera to work with VLC on MacOS X? I've used VLC to connect to Logitech cams under Windows before, but that was just via direct show. I'm assuming I want t...

Hmmmm

I don't know. I use it for live video streaming, so there's not been much need for me to investigate a progress bar.

So is it on the server that you want to show a progress indicator or on the clients?
That was me by the way

Killing the VLC process

G'day I use the dummy interface with the --dummy-quiet argument to connect to a network streamed web cam to allow our receptionists and others to monitor the front desk without being out there. Is there a way to kill the VLC process once the viewport's been closed. If someone does close the window, ...

I use a vbs script to launch my VLC server, and though the how-to tells you what you need to do, it seems to have a few issues with quotes. This is (at least an older version of) what I use to launch my server from the command line: vlc.exe --intf dummy --dummy-quiet --video-on-top --width 120 --hei...

On the Microsoft site they talk about two "" in a row being converted into the double quote character within a string, but I was never able to get that working. It turns out my problem was not so much to do with the quotes as it was to do with the fact that VLC doesn't want to let me use m...

Launching VLC From A Script

G'day I'm having a bit of a problem with VLC. I'm looking to stream video from a machine on our network. I'm planning on putting a login script for certain users so that VLC will be launched in client or server mode as appropriate and automatically connect, etc. I'm using a .vbs (which is entirely e...

*bump* This was very helpful to me and solved a random reboot I was having with a logitech Quickcam IM. My old Quickcam Express worked fine, but the new one (which I purchased for my work, who want it for a sort of closed circuit security camera) kept exploding. I was nearly to the point where I was...
