Whenever I try to open a mkv file in vlc, nothing happens at all. It's as if I never asked it to open anything, it just sits there. How do I get vlc to play this mkv file?

This is probably a really stupid question, but my VLC player is telling me there are updates, but when I try to install them, it wants a directory. Where do I tell it to go? Also, would these updates help some videos I have play smoother? They're .ts files, some play fine, while others are really ch...
