Might there be an "intelligent" HDMI switch that "preserves the connection" ?

Can anyone shed some light on why this happens ?

I found that WMP *does* resume HDMI playback when HDMI is re-connected (in about 5 seconds).
So it's not an insurmountable problem !

Thanks a lot for the info. Trying not to appear dumb, but i am really quite lost. Perhaps I could bother you with 2 more questions ?: What I am really after is the ability to control/monitor VLC from my pgm **such that the "normal" VLC controls still work** (just as i do with WinAmp). I.E....
