I think I have had this and a similar problem, and I think I have solved it (you never know - it might come back!). I now have U11.04+VLC1.1.9 and not only did I sometimes experience your problem, but also audio failure after some minutes eg 10-15. As with you, the work around was to alter the audio...

Oops- spoke too soon. Still find various dvr-ms files from the past that will not play sound on 1.0.6.

One such movie shows codec info audio as mpga stereo sample rate 22050Hz

Seems fixed in 1.0.6, or perhaps 1.0.5

PS: Just discovered that GOM media player on Windows (pretty much straight out of the box) plays dvr-ms files WITH sound that do NOT provide sound via VLC. Not much help to me though as there is no GOM for MAC OS X.

I am trying to use vlc 1.0.2 on Windows XP MCE to play its dvr-ms recordings.
