it should work. vlc does not need to "be installed" to work, at least not on windows.

I find it quite unlikely, given the way vlc detects what different streams are. But I guess the mozilla plugin easily could support quite a few more formats, just by adding the appropriate mime types.

there might be an 0.8.2 not far from now without this feature. Otherwise it will be in 0.8.2, and it will be a while to the release

SNOW is currently just as unsupported by vlc as dirac is, and I find Guest #007, James Guest's post very unappropriate. Though I can agree that the amount of information in sankt's posts are a bit too much except for the very very interrested person. (And as such probably could have been transmitted...

vlc uses the video card only for color conversion and scaling. These features are awailable on most cards available nowadays. with a graphics card that supports this, and a cpu of about 2ghz, you should be able to play hdtv with vlc just fine.

preferences->plugins->text renderer->freetype

is where you can change the subtitle font. Please note though that some subtitle formats are stored as pictures, then there is nothing you can do.

it is parially supported. Some features does not work, or even make vlc crash. Right now there seems to be some hope that this can be improved soon.

sub+idx type subtitles are stored as pictuers, so you can't change their font. they probably look squeezed because of a scaling bug we had that I think is fixed now, and will be corrected in the next release

The first files you should try to get compiled are the files in the src/ subfolder. These are the core in the vlc application. More specifically you should try to compile all the files in SOURCES_libvlc_common section in Makefile.am. You may need to manually construct a config.h from config.h.in to ...

I think winlirc can be used indirectly through girder and some hotkeys and such. At least I've heard reports of such setups working. Supporting winlirc should only be a matter of porting liblirc_client to winlirc. But I don't have enough motivation to do that myself (and my laptop (which is the only...

hotkeys like pressing (shift/crtl/alt)left/right when video has focus.

It works over http for some file types, specifically it does not work for avi/mp4.

the answer is simply that vlc can't play h264 over rtsp. The rtsp library vlc uses simply does not know how to receive h264
